About the Expedition

Beneath the Surfaceof Ceylon

Sri Lanka — historically known as Ceylon — is among the world's oldest and most storied gemstone origins. The island yields an extraordinary diversity of precious stones from a uniquely concentrated geography: sapphires, spinels, chrysoberyls, moonstones, and more, all within a few hours of each other.

The journey takes you through Beruwala — one of Asia's most important source gem markets — into working sapphire mines in Ratnapura, both shaft and riverbed, a traditional heat treatment workshop, and a lapidary where rough crystal becomes a finished stone, before a final stop at a mechanised mine in Elahara. A short detour into Ceylon's wildlife and tea country rounds out the trip.

Real Mines · Shaft, Riverbed, Heat Treatment & Cutting

Ratnapura — literally "City of Gems" in Sinhalese — is the heart of Sri Lanka's gem mining industry, home to two real, currently operating mine types: a shaft mine you descend into, and a riverbed mine where you pan for stones by hand. You will also visit a local heat treatment workshop and a lapidary to witness the traditional firing and cutting techniques Ceylon craftsmen have passed down for generations, watching rough crystal become a finished stone.

Field Tips

Respecting Local MinersAny rough stone found or panned at the mines belongs to the local miners, not to you. If you want to keep a stone, you buy it from the miner directly — a small but important gesture of respect for their labour, and part of how we approach this trip responsibly.

Pack SmartYou'll likely get your clothes dirty and shoes soaked this day, so pack a spare pair of sneakers and socks. A disposable poncho or a waterproof phone pouch is also worth bringing along.

Weather NoteThe riverbed mine experience depends heavily on local weather and water levels. If rainfall limits a full experience, GUILD adjusts the plan based on conditions on the ground and offers an equally worthwhile alternative.

Elahara represents the modern face of Sri Lanka's gem industry. Here you'll visit a working mechanised mine and see how heavy equipment extracts stones from the ground at scale — a striking contrast to the traditional, hands-on mining at Ratnapura.

Trip Structure

Landing Day & Departure Day

Day 1 is arrival only — airport pickup and rest at the hotel. The core gem program runs from Day 2 through the second-to-last day. Departure day is lighter: meals remain included, with optional visits timed around your flight so you can leave at an easy pace.

Day 1

Landing Day

The first day is arrival only — no scheduled activities. After landing at Colombo Airport, a group transfer takes you to the hotel to rest and recover from travel. The official program begins on Day 2.

Day 2 – Second-to-Last Day

Core Program

All main activities — the gem market, mine visits, lapidary workshop, and more — take place during this period. This is the heart of the expedition.

Final Day

Departure Day

The core gem itinerary wraps on the second-to-last day so no one is rushed onto a late-night flight. Departure day is kept lighter: breakfast, lunch, and dinner are still included, and depending on flight times we can visit a Ceylon tea estate, or a souvenir shop if you would like. The rest of the day stays flexible for the airport.
